[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left” font_size=”22″ font_font=”Oswald” font_color=”%23c2c2c2″]The first week of instruction will focus on the dynamics of Value, Color and Design Principles, which are so necessary in the creation of successful paintings. For this segment we will paint from reference material, as if we were in the field. This approach will enable class participants to use photos and field studies, so necessary in studio painting, introducing a much broader range of possibilities and outcomes. Week 1 introduces a skill that is vitally important to the creation of better landscapes – the ability of the artist to correctly observe relationships in nature. This is a huge concept, too often overlooked in landscape painting classes. It will profoundly affect your work, whether it is studio or plein air.
All skill levels are welcome.

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left” font_size=”22″ font_font=”Oswald” font_color=”%23c2c2c2″]This week focuses on a four-step shorthand system John employs on location. He engineered this method to quickly organize the canvas, emphasizing important areas and editing out unnecessary details. This ability to capture and state your intention quickly will change everything about your experience painting outdoors. Week 2 will prepare you to paint successfully what you see even though you are in an environment with ever changing light and weather conditions..[/text_block]

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left” font_size=”22″ font_font=”Oswald” font_color=”%23c2c2c2″]

Week 2 Week two is a plein air experience that builds upon the fundamentals taught in week one. Having spent your first week learning  in the relaxed atmosphere of the classroom, students now get the opportunity to apply your knowledge in the challenging outdoor environment.

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left” font_size=”22″ font_font=”Oswald” font_color=”%23c2c2c2″]Week 3[/text_block]
[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left” font_size=”22″ font_font=”Oswald” font_color=”%23c2c2c2″]Week 3 will focus on painting and finishing studio pieces, with an opportunity to work in a larger format if desired. Here, we will continue to build upon key insights gained in weeks 1 and 2. Participants will be able to apply previously learned principles of design and color, while incorporating smaller sketches, as an aid in producing the larger work. The value of field studies, as a tool for capturing color notes and a sense of truth in light and outdoor atmosphere, will add new dimension to your arsenal of knowledge. [/text_block]

[text_block style=”style_1.png” align=”left” font_size=”22″ font_font=”Oswald” font_color=”%23c2c2c2″]As is often the case, larger paintings done in the studio are not simply larger versions of their outdoor sketches. Along with size increases, specific considerations of paint application, edges, and shape must be taken into consideration. These nuances will be discussed and demonstrated to give increased understanding in this area. As the course unfolds, John will demonstrate a variety of subjects: sky, clouds, trees, rocks, and water, etc. The course will focus keenly on the design process, from the inception of an idea to sketches abd revisions and then on to the finished painting.

As an added incentive, this carefully designed three-week format will cover the whole gallery ready process, from start to finish. This extended time for studio painting, which allows for multiple sessions of rework and refinement, is rarely granted to students taking one or even two-week workshops. Students will discover that location and studio work complement one another, and add greater dimension to our progress as artists.
